I think the weight of any theory is in preponderance of the evidence to support it. We are increasingly living in a data-driven world. In that idea the larger or more aggressive the claim is that has either a lack of evidence or worse contradictory evidence Some of the the claims that hit the benchmarks, of
I am not sure ridicoulus is the word choice I woudl personally but instead say :
Bold claim that Lacks evidence or has contradictory evidence include (for examples)
a ) global warming is a hoax. b) the world is flat (flat earthers) c) D Trump had the election stolen from him d) alien abduction stories, (obviously I haven’t heard all of them) e) God exists (at least in the Abrahamic religions / an anthropomorphic God)
But I do realize there are deep emotional commitments to each and everyone of those and do not want to be completely insensitive to that reality.
I think the emotional commitments are fascinating though and wish people would spend more time explaining why they are emotionally invested in those ideas as opposed to not have data driven evidence.
@robertsnj Have you ever dug into the flat Earth conspiracy? It is 100% evidence-based. There is very little faith involved. Unlike gravity, which is a theory that is taught to us as a fact.,
Yes I have, and I've dug into the evidence it fails to address!!
Go to Chicago. Head out on Lake Michigan on a calm day. Watch the city sink into the lake!! No, not really; it's just a bit beyond the curve of the Earth.
Go to Lake Ponchartrain.
Check out the power lines. Take some pictures.

Then check out the causeway. Take some pictures.
Did they build all these wind turbines partway under water? Nope. Curve of the Earth again.
That Democrats are systematically killing children. (Via Q-Anon and Alex Jones.)
One version is that they kill them to drink their blood, which supposedly contains a substance that prolongs life.
Another version is that they force people at gunpoint to kill children and record it on camera, in order to blackmail the person.
It is amazing that none of these child victims have been named, and that no parent has complained.
_______
Prediction: someone who reads this, and is angry that I posted it, will try to discredit me by intentionally twisting my words and saying, "So, Watson, you're not upset about the killing of children?"
It's an old, completely ineffective, rhetorical dodge.
@Nitedoc The Earth IS both flat and motionless. If you attempt to prove the globe you will fail. Please try to prove the globe to yourself without NASA or any other space agency.
The globe is the most ridiculous conspiracy theory I've ever heard?
Here's a bit of the "round Earth" evidence that we can all observe. No NASA, no satellites, just local observations. Well, OK, the plane routes might cost some serious $$.
I particularly liked this one proving the "eye level horizon" claim is false https://flatearth.ws/water-level-horizon
I also liked this one disproving claim 6 (just google for Ponchartrain power lines; hundreds have shot this image)
@autumngirl27 Yes indeed! Ancient Greeks watched ships sail away from harbor, and noticed that the hull appeared to sink lower and lower until only the masts could be seen. The same observations are much easier today from a hill above a harbor with a good pair of binoculars. They also noticed that during a lunar eclipse, the shadow of the Earth cast onto the moon had a curved edge.
That the founding fathers were all satanists. There's a truly lengthy body of "proof", including a pentagram street design in Washington DC, and the fact that some or many of the founding fathers were Masons and included Masonic symbols on our money.

The claim by racists that Michelle Obama was once a man, in spite of all the photos of her as a little girl, and the two daughters who look just like her and her husband. Jokes about that still really annoy me. 🤬
