3 prisoners die of thirst in a jail, consequences of living on a prison planet.

They were mentally ill and unable to recognize that they were thirsty and so they ended up dying. Jails are not for the mentally ill, cops are enforcing the law, not therapists. They are not qualified. To paraphrase the lawyer in the video, if the state chooses to house mentally ill people in jail and criminalize illness, then yes you do indeed make yourself responsible by default.

Apparently the jail doesn't understand mental illness and that's a problem.

Prison should be illegal, if you send people to prison then off to jail you go!
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Rolexeo I just think with cases of mental illness where the person isn't even aware, cops are not equipped with that. And I think it's really easy for neurotypicals to be neurotypical in the way of "if it doesn't affect me, it's fine." But I mean everyone thinks they can never end up in those situations until you do. Then you'll wish people with more experience with anything you're going through were around.

People generally only care if it directly affects them.
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
@Rolexeo well no we need prisons, what they need to do is improve how they’re run simple.

What should happen to the mentally ill and dangerous, neither jails nor mental health facilities are set up to manage them.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
@SatanBurger uh my spouse is in the field in the THICK of this issue and I have a nuanced understanding of the hoops administrators have to go through to get someone placed. Oh and I couldn't be further from right wing. And I have family who are cops and completely agree, they have no business managing the mentally ill.

My point was only that the whole system very messed up and it's BECAUSE of politics.

But thanks for jumping to a whole bunch of conclusions about me.

I said over half the country because it's true, neither conservatives nor liberals are voting to throw money at this problem and its putting lots of people at risk; patients, mental care providers, prison staff, cops, EMTs, AND the public. People in the public have been murdered because neither a prison or mental health facilities are equipped to care for MID, so sometimes MIDs are simply discharged where they end up committing more assaults.

@Starcrossed Ah I see what you were saying now and I do apologize, I honestly feel bad. There's too many on here who want to play right wing buzz word bingo when you bring up some policies that don't involve stepping on homeless people for fun or throwing someone down the stairs. I am just used to those conversations so I felt like that's where you were going.

Furthermore, I don't get people... a right winger could approach me about the mental health care issue and propose something or a left winger could do the same, what I would do is take both in mind and if I was a politician, I would sit down and think hard about policies and other resources to make things right. I would probably take both ideas to see if I can meet in the middle and what is doable, what isn't. This sounds very logical to me.

I don't understand why people just want to simultaneously complain about an issue but when anything is proposed it gets fought against. What they're really saying is that they don't care deep down but I don't get how one can not care and then complain about crime like let's say conservatives do.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Starcrossed I genuinely apologize, I don't expect you to forgive me but I know what you're saying now. I took it another way.
I'd imagine they have a fair idea of mental illnesses. Solitary is designed to essentially induce insanity
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Justafantasy well then they shouldn't take the plausible deniability route lol

None of them do. Ask me how I know.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@LordShadowfire I think it would be scary, imagine being with strangers who don't know how you feel, that's honestly crazy to me.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@SatanBurger The ones I really felt sorry for were the ones who were on thorazine. You're supposed to take a second pill with the thorazine to avoid doing the thorazine shuffle, but the DOC wouldn't give it to them.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@LordShadowfire That's cruel, another reason to despise bureaucracy. Someone with no experience probably looks at that and decides to make whatever policies "they" feel are reasonable when there should be clear set standards.

@Bang5luts There was a woman who was in her 60s and had Parkinson's and dementia, cops abused her and she asked if she could go home. That was insane to me. How anyone couldn't see an issue with our mental health system and the way we treat others is beyond me.
Bang5luts · M
@SatanBurger and our criminal justice system as well. When jails, prisons, cops, judges and lawyers are given cash incentives by the amount of people incarcerated there will always have innocent people suffering. Whether because of mental illness or because their rights were violated and they arent educated enough to know it.
