The oil that would travel in this pipeline is currently being delivered by rail. Environmentalists think this pipeline is environmentally risky. But sending it by rail is safer?
You might want to see what person owned those rail tank cars. Most are owned by a guy named, Warren Buffett. Now you know why the pipe line was stopped.
The reason some are against the pipeline has zero to do with Buffet owning the rail cars ... it has to do with the environmental costs of extracting tar sands oil in Alberta which unfortunately is not the cleanest of processes.. Now that said.. the proven reserves of the tar sands project dwarfs proven Saudi reserves and the energy security that North America can have (Canada and the USA) from this supply of energy is important economically... Figure if the pipe line is NOT built that instead of this oil going to Texas based refineries - it will flow to CHINA instead but either way it is going to be produced so despite environmental concerns ... from a strategic and economic perspective it is FAR better to keep that oil in North America than it is to export it off shore... The Keystone XL pipeline happens to make sense DESPITE the environmental concerns and once it is rolling additional work can be achieved to mitigate / alleviate the environmental concerns....
I voted no and the why is fairly simple... I saw it as a boon for the Koch empire, but few others here (North America) would see much in the way of benefits when weighed against the potential environmental impact.
Let's see, USA subsidies to help Canada sell their oil on an international market. Meanwhile we tear up our land and incur environmental risk at what gain to US? It's not like the oil is not already being transported by existing pipelines...
@OldMan70 You speak conjecture like it's fact. You apparently know that the Keystone owners would walk away from a multi billion dollar endeavor if there was a leak in the pipe? LOL Pretty funny.
@jackjjackson Congratulation on keeping your good humor despite the idiot "rejoinders". One point is, we export the oil we don't need or can't easily process and import that we can. US still comes out ahead.
