The reason some are against the pipeline has zero to do with Buffet owning the rail cars ... it has to do with the environmental costs of extracting tar sands oil in Alberta which unfortunately is not the cleanest of processes.. Now that said.. the proven reserves of the tar sands project dwarfs proven Saudi reserves and the energy security that North America can have (Canada and the USA) from this supply of energy is important economically... Figure if the pipe line is NOT built that instead of this oil going to Texas based refineries - it will flow to CHINA instead but either way it is going to be produced so despite environmental concerns ... from a strategic and economic perspective it is FAR better to keep that oil in North America than it is to export it off shore... The Keystone XL pipeline happens to make sense DESPITE the environmental concerns and once it is rolling additional work can be achieved to mitigate / alleviate the environmental concerns....
