Man Fatally Beats Co-worker To Death With a Baseball Bat

According to investigators, a 50-year-old man in Arizona fatally beat a coworker to death in a company cafeteria with a baseball bat.

Derrick Simmons, 50, was arrested on February 18 in Chandler, Arizona, for the murder of one of his coworkers and the attempted murder of another at the Intel chip factory.

Chandler police officers arrested Simmons and took him to a detention center, where he is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

According to court documents, Simmons reportedly attacked people in the cafeteria at the Intel Ocotillo Campus at 6:15 a.m. on Saturday.

One of the victims was discovered dead in the facility’s cafeteria, with obvious signs of blunt-force trauma. Another victim was found and sent to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

According to the court records, this is not Simmons’ first run-in with the law. The suspect has a criminal past and was previously convicted of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, according to available records.

Time to ban those assault baseball bats....

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout That is some old school Macgyver stuff
FBI homicide data from 2019. Notice the columns for blunt objects vs rifles. It should also be noted that AR-15s make up less than 25% of rifle homicides.

Blame the company HR dept. that hired this guy in the first place.

Yeah, and if he had an ar or 9mm with a high capacity mag, the whole of the population of that cafeteria could be dead.
One can kill another with a plastic spork. But likely, only one.

@sunsporter1649 or "the good guy" might just cancel some bystander's permit from "friendly" fire.
You people just don't think these things through.

Outlaw bats?

Shouldn't his company know about his criminal past and have eyes on him at work?
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@PatKirby Very possible. But every time people go though HR they have to ask about the persons. criminal past or hell run a background check. I know I was finger printed a few times

@bhatjc

Fell through the cracks, HR fucked up. HR's only real function for their existence is to protect the corporation from litigation, while projecting the impression that they actually care about employees. Look at the excuse that goes for insurance at companies these days, especially as they play up the few bright sides while ignoring the obvious shitty sides (high deductibles). I see a huge lawsuit followed by layoffs on the horizon for the company.

@PatKirby Damn right. Class action lawsuit to boot as well.
