Awww. I HATE thinking about cold, hungry animals in this weather. It breaks my heart. My friend, Tom, has a friend who raises chickens and is feeding at LEAST ten feral cats all by himself. Whenever I go to the food pantry for my neighbors I ask them if they have any cat food. That way, I am also contributing to their upkeep.

@4meAndyou It’s hit or miss at the animal shelter.They are usually full up. Friday is the best day but I’ve taken one and they turned it away. Sometimes there is some kind of health issues they are treating and they halt taking them till they can clear out some of them. I did find a tiny kitten that was crying on my doorstep and didn’t call, just drove up and they took him. Gave him a worm shot first thing, poor baby. I don’t know how that kitten was even big enough to wander up to the house.

@4meAndyou They said they would get them treated for parasites, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered. Put them up for adoption on their site or if maybe someone would get them for their Barn-Cat program and give them a home in the country. And if all that fails they’ll clip one ear and drive them back to the neighborhood where they were removed and release them. None of the cats I took in were ever brought back here which makes me feel hopeful for them.

Two neighborhood rascal cats wait for me to get home late at night to feed them food and treats. One eats then runs (he must have an appt or something) while the other stays for awhile and guards the house 'til morning. Both greedily demand their grub so I call them Commando and Demando.
Last nite the wind howled loudly while moving the bushes where they hide around and around. So they waited on the porch under my bench scared big time and ready to come inside where it was warm and quiet with food & water. You could hear it in their groaning to come inside that even though they act rough & tough, you don't fool around with mother nature and know who's really the boss, hahaha!

@PatKirby the wind scares the ferals because they can’t hear anything that might be sneaking up behind them. Figured that out with Rhubarb. Last time I got scratched (lightly) was when it was really windy and he was skittish. I know he didn’t mean to, he seemed to be sorry after he realized what he did, I bent down to put his food on a plate and he swiped at me.

@cherokeepatti
This is exactly what feral Commando does. Swipes at me right after I put the bowl down, or don't pet him fast enough. Odd behavior but I think it may be attention or jealousy related.

@PatKirby What I did with Rhubarb one day was grab the food back and told him he hurt me. His behavior immediately changed, he started going in circles around me rubbing on my legs to show that he was sorry. I know he didn’t mean to hurt me that last time, it was mostly just reflex due to being scared.

I want to snuggle those cats 🤗

@FreestyleArt I wish you could adopt some of them. That tiger is so beautiful, he has big orange swirls. He purrs loud when I feed him. With his personality he is so sweet and beautiful. There are two big brothers, muscular too. They have dark gray stripes. They are very friendly and let me pet them when I feed them. I think they are hunters, they’ll get on my roof and chase something all over it sometimes.
