Woke Up To A Chilly House, Howling Damp Winds, And Cold Hungry Cats At My Door…

Rattled the doorknob and the howling began. The beautiful half-grown tiger cat was wanting his breakfast. I grabbed a tea kettle of water, a jug of dry food and two cans of wet food for him and He invited all his friends. Thank goodness there are two neighbors who also pitch in to feed these cats.

Awww. I HATE thinking about cold, hungry animals in this weather. It breaks my heart. My friend, Tom, has a friend who raises chickens and is feeding at LEAST ten feral cats all by himself. Whenever I go to the food pantry for my neighbors I ask them if they have any cat food. That way, I am also contributing to their upkeep.

@4meAndyou They have a program for those who are fostering cats that need to be adopted. They will give cat food that is donated to Seniors who are retired and want to foster them. But I doubt if there is anything for feral cats. I would love to see some of these cats get adopted. I love that yellow cat, and would keep him myself if I could…he has an exuberant personality. One time he saw me and was so excited he ran up to the porch and did a flip and did a slide towards me. That kind of thing. He doesn’t hold back. There are others that are tame enough to let me pet them when I put food out for them. Two brothers are very large and muscular. I think they hunt squirrels, have heard one barking when it was treed. And have heard and seen them on the roof of the house a few times.

@cherokeepatti I wish you could adopt that little guy, too. But he would be a bit too wild, I think.

@4meAndyou He seems very tame. Let’s me pet him and so sweet too. I can see him coming inside and sitting on my lap and going to sleep. Someone needs to spoil that little fellow rotten.

@cherokeepatti Awww. I wish it could be you. But you have Boo and the others to think about. So much love, and so many who need it!

@4meAndyou In my daydreaming mind I would have a country home with a special room for the birds, like an aviary that no cat would be allowed into. That way I could have a cat again.

@cherokeepatti That would be like a dream come true! I used to day dream, too, and wish I had a small house with a large barn, heated, where I could keep dogs and cats and any animal in need of help.

@cherokeepatti I used to work at a multi-million dollar home in Plymouth, for a woman with a broken hip. She had me feed the feral cats, and SHE had a little Igloo cat shelter for them right outside her back door. She was the one whose cat I rescued when she was sent to the nursing home. He was too old to be adopted, so no shelter would take him.

@4meAndyou I would like to see the young cats get adopted before that happens. The bully cat finally died. I hadn’t seen him in a long time, the woman who brought him here lives across the street a couple houses down. She let him (and three other cats that she brought with her) roam all the time and that was a big problem. He would wander the neighborhood trying to fight the other cats. I would run him off when he came near here to keep him from fighting Rhubarb and the other cats. Rhubarb got torn up bad one time by him and I gave him colloidal silver to help him heal.

@cherokeepatti It might be possible to pick one of those tame-ish cats up, and take them to be adopted!

@4meAndyou It’s hit or miss at the animal shelter. They are usually full up. Friday is the best day but I’ve taken one and they turned it away. Sometimes there is some kind of health issues they are treating and they halt taking them till they can clear out some of them. I did find a tiny kitten that was crying on my doorstep and didn’t call, just drove up and they took him. Gave him a worm shot first thing, poor baby. I don’t know how that kitten was even big enough to wander up to the house.

@cherokeepatti It all breaks my heart.

@4meAndyou They said they would get them treated for parasites, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered. Put them up for adoption on their site or if maybe someone would get them for their Barn-Cat program and give them a home in the country. And if all that fails they’ll clip one ear and drive them back to the neighborhood where they were removed and release them. None of the cats I took in were ever brought back here which makes me feel hopeful for them.
