We have a tornado warning in effect for the next half hour and we just lost our electricity. There is some serious wind going on too. No rain at the moment though.
Hope you make it through this okay. We're just getting rain in NC and it looks like the western part of the state will get the worst of it. We may get rain and wind.
Watching the live footage from down there, it's getting rough. In some parts, agencies told people sheltering in-place to write their name and DOB on their arms and legs....in case.
Hope you guys are out of the direct path, and okay.
@Musicman It's moving at 16 mph. I can't seem to find the distance between Tampa Bay and Big Bend...but they lost power in Tampa Bay at 4 pm. I am going to guess it will hit Big Bend by 9 pm. and will make landfall there in a really horrible way around midnight.
Florida has been through more than a category 4 before, but it's rare. And it all depends on path and also the amount of time endured. Recent hurricanes that stall and deliver rain measured in feet has the national hurricane centre reexaming how they measure. Be safe, if you are staying have non perishables with you. Once you decide to stay you have only so many choices.
@thewindupbirdchronicles That is true. Plus you need to have some cash. If the Internet is down people don't take credit cards. Cash is king. After hurricane Ian. Stores and restaurants didn't take credit cards for a month.
@Musicman Cash would be king. I read of places that at times won't have electricity for upto a month after a hurricane. People don't just pick up and leave so easily. They are often tied by family and/or their work. That's if they have a home to go to. I'm lucky in Ontario, while we may experience relative extremes in temperatures and weather in other ways, the idea of being displaced here is extremely rare.
@thewindupbirdchronicles You are definitely right. During those times some, and I repeat some, grocery stores and gas stations have generators and will be open, but only for limited hours per day and none will accept credit or debit cards. Then even some of the major highways will either be flooded or torn up so gas stations and stores can't be resupplied and people can't leave town to go to another town that has electricity to shop.
There has been some serious wind going on here too, for a few hours now. Also tornado warnings, but I am seeing conflicting reports about whether there any currently active ones for your county...or mine.
@Musicman when i drive to Florida each year i start out at like 2am. Not as much traffic after midnight. If you can get rested, may want to drive at night. Keep in touch.
@Jenny1234 @JohnnyNoir @carpediem The storm has passed. We are healthy and safe. Our property didn't have any damage. We were truly blessed. There was limited flooding in our area. One RV park on the Myakka river flooded bad and was under water. I felt so bad for them. We lost electricity for 10 hours. Florida Power and Light says everyone in our area should have their power restored by Sunday night.
