Worst straight line storm I have ever seen!

I live outside Memphis Tn and we had a horrible storm a few hours ago. There are several cities that have absolutely no electricity at all and I have never seen so many trees struck by lightning. I have no electricity and no one in my neighborhood or city does either. Of course I will lose all the food in my refrigerator and I have no idea when electricity will be restored since it looks like the whole state is out. Wonder where I will get some food if all the stores are shut down?

wonder what is going on. I live in Florida. we had a rain storm yesterday like no other.
@akindheart actually, yesterday's storm wasnt that bad tbh 🤷‍♂️ don't know where the "like no other" came from
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Mistakesmakeus well i will tell you where it came from. i have never had that kind of downpour before. it was hitting my back sliding doors so hard i was sure i would have a flood inside.
@akindheart fort lauderdale got hit with flood rains so hard that it completely halted 2 airports plus stopped all gass deliveries backing everything up for weeks to the point where no one could find gas and when 1 shipment came it it was gone within the hour. That was 2 feet of rain in less than 24 hours and that wasnt too long ago either

Oh my god, that's one thing I don't miss about the south- their storms are terrifying!

I hope your power comes back on very soon. 🙏🏻
@DearAmbellina2113 thanks! Me too- this is miserable!

Was it a derecho? We had one blow through the area I live in, in 1998, and it flattened mature cornfields to six inches of mush. I lost close to 20 trees and many trees that lived still have damage 25 years later. My condolences to you and your neighbors.

@Mardrae A derecho is a type of straight line wind storm, usually widespread and fast moving, with high winds and embedded thunderstorms. We got hit with 100 mph winds and so much lightning the sky was continually lit up at 100 in the morning. The storm itself was travelling east at 60 mph.
@windinhishair I bet that’s what it was then. It covered several states
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Mardrae That sounds like one. They take a very specific set of atmospheric conditions, but they happen in the US once a year or so.

We are supposed to getting it tomorrow. Lots of wind
@Ravens80 I wouldn’t think of it either. What I am stressing about is losing all the food in my refrigerator from no electricity and getting no sleep because of being in 90• weather in my house. I’m used to sleeping with my air on 75• and a box fan right next to my bed. Won’t have that till they get my electricity back on.
Ravens80 · 46-50, F
@Mardrae can you get a generator?
@Ravens80 🤣 With what? My looks? They cost a LOT of money and $150-$200 or more a month to run! I am not rich like that.
originnone · 56-60, M
I hope you have cans of food...that said, every utility in the country will be sending people to the area tonight, and they won't stop until the electricity is restored....
@originnone unfortunately I don’t have any canned food at all. All my food is in the freezer and refrigerator

Wow! That happened to us in east Texas about 10 days ago so we know how you all feel
@Dawgsfan3 how long was your electricity out?
Dawgsfan3 · 41-45, M
@Mardrae it was actually 2 separate ones. The first was from 1 in the morning till 4 in the afternoon. The second was from 11 Sunday morning till 1 Monday afternoon

Wow, It stormed in my area earlier too. Power went out and went back on.

@BackyardShaman who can afford a whole house generator? I am a widow who works as a cashier in a grocery store. 😂

Hope you have your electricity back on by now.
Canuckle · 51-55, M
@Mardrae oh wow! That really sucks! Peanut butter, honey and bread would be my staple over the next few days. I hope your fridge will stay cool enough.
@Canuckle it’s already melted unfortunately. I work in a grocery store that has a hot bar and salad bar so I can always eat at work. I’m just off today and bought my groceries before the storm hit so I didn’t know my area was hit so hard.
Canuckle · 51-55, M
@Mardrae I wonder if that’s the same storm that came through Indiana yesterday. There were tornado warnings yesterday. I’m glad you have a place to eat if need be.

It’s called Global Warming
Keeping fridge closed maximum helps keep the food
