@swirlie snow would have to stop before reaching near zero going downwards. While rain would have to stop going upwards to zero from the negative side. Zero again is no precipitation.
Very simplistic point of view. Don't make it more complicated. Because it simply can't handle complicated situations.
More complexity needs more vectors (dimensions).

The original range was something like 10-14 inches, I would say we got about a foot of snow over here before it switched to sleet.
