Every time I see a baseball player lope to first base on what looks like a sure out

I think of Pete Rose. He NEVER (to my knowledge) slowed up but gave it his all in case the infielder bobbled the ball. That error may lead to a run then to a win which may win the entire season.

I don't recall ever seeing a major leaguer lope to 1st on a ground ball. I have on a short fly or pop up where he can easily get to first but not have a chance of getting to 2nd if the ball is dropped.

Many of the things Rose did were self serving. I'm surprised he didn't dive slide into 2nd when he was on 1st and the batter walked. Pete IMO was like: "Watch me hustle".

BTW who's on first?

Here's the thing - I much admire the way he's worked to become a bona fide 1st baseman... he hustles for every pop fly foul ball for instance. And he and Kirk have that pickoff play at first down pretty good, too.

@rinkydinkydoink The fifties and sixties were a great time to be a kid and a baseball fan. I do remember seeing Musial play. I also remember Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reece broadcasting The Game of the Week on Saturday afternoon. Dean was hilarious. He usually sang a few verses of The Wabash Cannonball at some point during the broadcast. Usually when they changed pitchers.

I remember when Ricky Henderson would sometimes be criticized for "dogging" it and his answer was basically, "Hey, I've lasted as long as I have by knowing when to push my body and when to ease up a bit."

@rinkydinkydoink Oh yes, though both had long careers. 3,801 games for Ricky, 3,562 for Pete. (That's regular season games, I believe)

He's running the bases "up there" now... may he RIP

@rinkydinkydoink Meant .....past ...tence. May he forever RIP....in the Diamond that shines in the light of God.
@Punxi

Do you mean in the looking-down-from-Heaven sense?
It would've meant a lot to him to have been reinstated while he was alive - but, anyhoo... the next stop may be Cooperstown :)
