Mathematically challenged here...but even I was able to figure out that it had to be 50.

Nope, it's all good.
Let n = number of students, p = number passed, f = number failed.
Obviously n = p + f, right?
p = 35 (given)
f = 30% of n = 0.3 * n
so
n = 35 + 0.3 * n
n - 0.3 * n = 35
0.7 * n = 35
n = 35 / 0.7 = 50

If we know 70% passed and 70% = 35
.7X = 35
X = 35/.7 or X=350/7 So X = 50
.7X = 35
X = 35/.7 or X=350/7 So X = 50
