@IamBack you have 3 parts of Kashmir, Indian-administered Kashmir (where many are being brutalised), Pakistani-administered Kashmir also known as Azad Kashmir which means free Kashmir and then a smaller region controlled by China.
Indian-administered Kashmir has held a special position historically, because of Article 370, a clause in the constitution which gave it significant autonomy, including its own constitution, a separate flag, and independence over all matters except foreign affairs, defence and communications. (much like Azad Kashmir) Except the BJP revoked this article but cut off all internet and telephone lines in Kashmir prior to announcing it to the country. This left all of them in the dark. Thousands of troops were sent in with the chief ministers under house arrest. This is when everything escalated as of recent times.
Most within Indian controlled Kashmir although diverse in opinion mostly do not want to governed by India but rather a union with Pakistan or as an independent country. Religion being the main factor considering it's the only state in India with a Muslim majority and is treated horrendously by the BJP
