Pretty early

Black Morels
TexChik · F
Wow those are big ones! That is the only fleshy fungi I have never found in the wild. I did a semester of plant taxonomy in college and I was assigned fleshy fungi, namely psilocybin species . I found a lot of other species while looking for those. But Morels were always at the top of the list. I see true moss at the base of one, must be wet there. Enjoy!

@TexChik Wrist rocket to the goat lol. Hell yeah.

@icedsky Oh yes. The ball bearings make a satisfying thump noise when it hits them in the head. A year later it got out and it hurt mom, and daddy was out on a tractor and I was there to get lunch for us both and then get back to work. I got mom in the house and made sure she was ok and grabbed my .22 out of the truck and ended the goat.

@TexChik well when they try to kill the people that take care of them they need to die.

slice them thin and dust them with a bit of flower and fry until crispy in butter. Hard to beat. Although Hen of the woods is a close second.

We won't see them here until early June. If we have a good haul, I will slice them and lay them on a cookie sheet and freeze them and once frozen put them in a baggie. They actually keep quite well if you do this.

@goliathtree Dehydrated them and will be using them through the spring more like a seasoning

@SW-User Yes they are edible. And have a great flavor.

@icedsky nice 🙂

@SW-User Do you like mushrooms?
SW-User
Yes so I guess they taste the same @icedsky

Are they really good?
icedsky · 51-55, M
@Quimliqer They are pretty good. Largely hollow so fill them with something and bake them. I used basically the inside of a chicken pot pie kind of stew with them.

@Quimliqer My aunt cooked some large ones. She soaked them overnight in salt water to draw out any impurities. Rinsed them off the next day, sliced them. Dipped them in egg & milk wash, breaded them with seasoned flour including some garlic salt and fried them. They were so good, tasted sort of like fried chicken.
