Wow those are big ones! That is the only fleshy fungi I have never found in the wild. I did a semester of plant taxonomy in college and I was assigned fleshy fungi, namely psilocybin species . I found a lot of other species while looking for those. But Morels were always at the top of the list. I see true moss at the base of one, must be wet there. Enjoy!

@TexChik Western Washington hose job wet.

@icedsky I was guessing Pacific NW because they are so big, here in Texas they are only around rivers and creeks with constant flow. The wild hogs usually find them before people can anymore. Average size in 2-3 inches long here.

@TexChik They grow near elm and black walnut trees. If you go hunting them after the ground warms up and after a good rain you can see them popping up in parts of Missouri. Where I was born the people will go on mushroom hunts and they have mushroom fry dinners because in the perfect conditions they can find them by the bushel basket. My uncle said he went one time and he could see them popping up, the conditions were perfect for it.

@TexChik Damn feral hogs are all over the place down that way. Bring a 12 gauge autoloader. Ever try to grow your own mushrooms? Lots of kits out there. Ive never tried them myself.

@icedsky We trap them at the farm and hunt them with AR's topped with night scopes. And still they thrive. We kill and butcher them for a "pig in the ground" feast (which is amazing by the way) , to add fat to our venison summer sausage, and to donate to our local church out there so that they can make sure the elderly that still prefer to live on their land have food to eat.

@TexChik Ill take a few chops! Smoke some up

@icedsky The Loins are always good as are the hams, everything else is a little lean or very tough. Those critters work for a living and are very fast!
icedsky ยท 51-55, M
@TexChik From what Ive seen fast and vicious bastards too.
TexChik ยท F
@icedsky In the spring if they have little ones on the ground, they are very aggressive. They have charged me on my horse a few times. I dont ride in an area where I know pigs are in the spring, and I never go unarmed. Now the boars, that are being hunted by dogs or maybe wounded are angry and stressed...they are definitely coming to kill you if they see you on foot as they are running by.

@TexChik Worse thing I've been chased by up here was a damn mountain goat. Pretty fast too but doesnt have any tusks to rip me open. Imagine a horse would punt a boar a pretty good one if it got too close. Followed by a couple well placed 5.56 rounds
TexChik ยท F
@icedsky Goats and sheep will knock the crap out of you if you let them. Usually when I am riding , I only carry a G21 (.45) and an extra mag.
cherokeepatti ยท 61-69, F
@TexChik they could run up behind you and break your back. Dangerous creatures.
icedsky ยท 51-55, M
@TexChik Oh I know! Long time ago delivering a bunch of tables to a house. Previous job I had. Pulled up and there was a mail man in his jeep out front. Red faced. Looked at me and said. Watch out for the fucking goat. And drove off. Im thinking ok buddy. Whatever. Go grab a table. Get it up on my shoulder out of the van and hear the patter of cloven feet running up behind me. I turn and POW!! Little bastard hit me at 40 mph right above the kneecaps!!

@icedsky When I was adopted (around 11) I had grown up on a farm and my adoptive parents had a farm...and a mean goat. I had an aluminum baseball bat. He got me twice, then I started going after him every time I saw him. With the bat, a rock, sling shot, my foot. Anything I had. My daddy being a retired marine officer told me I needed to learn how to take care of myself after the first time the goat dropped me. He never said anything after I started putting the hurt on that goat so I assumed that is what he meant.
cherokeepatti ยท 61-69, F
@TexChik What a picture you painted in my mind. Did the goat ever learn the meaning of boundaries? Or did he take a beating and keep on bleating?
icedsky ยท 51-55, M
@TexChik Wrist rocket to the goat lol. Hell yeah.
TexChik ยท F
@icedsky Oh yes. The ball bearings make a satisfying thump noise when it hits them in the head. A year later it got out and it hurt mom, and daddy was out on a tractor and I was there to get lunch for us both and then get back to work. I got mom in the house and made sure she was ok and grabbed my .22 out of the truck and ended the goat.

@TexChik well when they try to kill the people that take care of them they need to die.
