On May 15, 2025, the Nottoway Plantation in White Castle Louisiana, caught fire and burned down.

I’m glad that nobody was physically harmed during the fire, but I’m not going to lie; I can’t say I’m sorry about the fire itself.

As what the internet refers to as an ADOS (American Descendant Of Slavery), I could understand preserving these homes "in the name of history" if that’s what was being done here, establishing a museum for example, that discussed American Slavery and what was done to people under that system.

But this wasn’t that. Nottoway was a resort, a glamorous venue where people held parties and weddings, basically celebrating the oppression, from the perspective of the oppressors. The entire plantation system was a heritage built upon hatred and racism.

Based upon that, again, while I am grateful that there was no injury or loss of life, in regard to the destruction of a former slave plantation, I say, burn, baby, burn. 😞

I hate to see any piece of history destroyed. But I see it for what it is. A relic.
I understand your feeling.

I guess I kind of see it like the German concentration camps.

@bijouxbroussard Last thing to do is rebuild it. US should be a different place now, should be. Havent heard much news about police misbehaviour in the US recently, but then Donald makes so much noise, that is all you hear.

@bijouxbroussard Thats the tactic isnt it - hide it in plain sight and drown it with a rainstorm of fake news
Fire is purifying. I hope it works on that space .

Oh and I see it had been converted to an upscale hotel.

Kind of interesting to think that some of the ancestors of the slaves could have been guests

Wouldn't that have made the original owners roll over in their grave :)
@Pretzel The ancestors of the slaves ? No, I’m thinking you mean descendants, but even there I don’t know.
Pretzel · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard yes. Thanks for the correction, you are correct. Wouldn't be my idea of a good time.

I really enjoyed that people were going there and taking photos of themselves with the burning plantation in the background. Chef's kiss.

There is an entire subculture in the South who sees it as a mark of their glory days. They absolutely know its history, do not care, and feel it was wrongly taken away from them.

The post-Trump years will sadly engender the same system. The oppressor never concedes power with grace.
@Longpatrol I’m definitely aware of them. The irony is that in spite of this, even they resent being accused (to their faces) of racism.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@bijouxbroussard The cognitive disconnect is such that they think racism is walking up to someone and screaming the n word at them in public. They don't think about how perpetuating memories of an unequal system could ever be considered racism.
Do you really think people who got married there were celebrating slavery, or they’d just wanted to get married in a lavishly decorated room?

Maybe we should stop doing guided tours of Rome’s coliseum, or the Egyptian pyramids, or Algiers. Cos slavery…

@rinkydinkydoink I shall do likewise. And I should’ve done from the start.

It feels somehow symbolic to me

@Captain There I just hearted you, but you know I like you anyway so who cares.
Captain · 61-69, M
@Captain Im going to heart you more times than you heart me !
@Captain When you heart something you wrote, you’re hearting yourself. 😊
That's fair enough.

Yeah, I can appreciate it's architecture and aesthetics and it's kind of slightly sad to see that go. But the place was used to celebrate and relive antebellum South to people who just wanted to pay to cosplay as Antebellum slave owners and revel in scenes before the LOST CAUSE.

Nobody ever chose to atone for the sins it represented and use it for something better. Instead to make it a glorification of something dark. So no real tears she's here

I suspected this before I checked it out. Sadly it will be rebuilt...

People that wealthy have insurance to cover it.
@DeWayfarer I’ve no doubt. It’s always about the money.
They should've all been razed immediately after the war, and all the lands appropriated by the states for other uses

Then people who are too far removed from the war and are just daffy in general wouldn't even have the opportunity today to do utterly stupid things like have their wedding party pose inside actual slave cabins like it is somehow pleasant or cool
(this is one of our plantations in my area, where Lindsey Graham held an after-hours fundraiser a couple of decades ago no less)

@BlueGreenGrey

My god...this reminded me though...

A couple's slavery themed engagement photo shoot.
Wtf.

@JaggedLittlePill That’s ridiculous, but the sad part is that some people want to assimilate with the dominant culture so badly…
@JaggedLittlePill that's just nuts 😞
