On May 15, 2025, the Nottoway Plantation in White Castle Louisiana, caught fire and burned down.
I’m glad that nobody was physically harmed during the fire, but I’m not going to lie; I can’t say I’m sorry about the fire itself.
As what the internet refers to as an ADOS (American Descendant Of Slavery), I could understand preserving these homes "in the name of history" if that’s what was being done here, establishing a museum for example, that discussed American Slavery and what was done to people under that system.
But this wasn’t that. Nottoway was a resort, a glamorous venue where people held parties and weddings, basically celebrating the oppression, from the perspective of the oppressors. The entire plantation system was a heritage built upon hatred and racism.
Based upon that, again, while I am grateful that there was no injury or loss of life, in regard to the destruction of a former slave plantation, I say, burn, baby, burn. 😞

@Captain In the U.S. this part of our past is especially insidious. Our white countrymen want us to "get over it”, yet some of them want to romanticize aspects of those times. It’s not reasonable to want both. 🤨
@bijouxbroussard Well in the Uk the legacy is we supplied the boatsand the bodies and that isnt going away ever. I alwasy think to myself though that we were also putitng 10 year old boys up chimneys and down mines which wasnt much better. The good guys of Victorian industry - Lever, Cadbury. Brunnel ect are remembered for their villages for workers etc but any Dickens novel wil dispell that romantic reailty because most British captains of industry treated most workers all over the world as a means to an end and nothing else. Has the world got any better ? The rich have got richer but the poorest are still poor. The work houses or worse, deportation to become an Australian was the fate of many. Think the Australians got the best deal !
