In the UK, we have Catholic schools funded by the state. Though Protestantism is the official religion (it's called The Church of England!)
I went to Cordoba in Spain, where they have a massive beautiful church built inside a massive and beatiful mosque.
They also have that place in Italy. It's inside Rome, which is called the Vatican City. Some important Christian figures live there.

@Burnley123 Some European countries have less separation of church and state than America.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@BohemianBabe Yes, absolutely.
Some have more, with France being an obvious example.
Britain is weird in that Protestant Christianity is the official state religion, but the country is much more secular than America. Though we have few regular practising Christians, it's a hangover on from more traditional times.
When it is political, our official church leans centre-left, based on the weird idea that Christians should care for the poor more than they should hate gays, bomb Palestinians or cut corporate taxes.

I've had Americans tell me that it's illegal to criticize Islam in Europe. Which is very funny, since it's always people who know absolutely nothing about Europe outside of what right-wing media says.
SinlessOnslaught · M
@BohemianBabe In most senses, referring to all of it as Europe is too broad anyway. It's so large with so many different cultures (and obviously countries) but here in the US we think of them all as the same thing lol.
BohemianBabe · M
@SinlessOnslaught Yeah, but the kind of people we're talking about think all of Europe has been taken over by Muslims or Marxists or the Illuminati or whatever.
SinlessOnslaught · M
@BohemianBabe Nazis. They think they're all nazis.

Does he know that Christians pay some extra tax in certain parts of Germany? 😬 I think it's enough if you're baptized and if you want to be freed from it, you have to explicitly ask the church to give you a document saying that you are not the part of it or something like that.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@AdaXI The thing is that you didn't consent to be baptized because you were just a baby then and they automatically charge you this tax just because you are in their system and you have the extra work to apply to be exempt from it. At least so I heard. I'm not German, I just read that they asked even expats if they were baptized and when they said yes, they automatically were considered to be the part of the church and pay the tax. I have no idea if they verify it in the home country though.

Drives me crazy when I hear people saying something is "illegal" when it is not. 🤦♀
Yulianna · 26-30, F
@sarabee1995 🇺🇦💋 in which case i must observe that you are fortunate still to be walking the streets...
Almost every country in Europe legally established freedom of religion for people living in the country, and most also have anti-discrimination laws that specifically highlight religious freedom.
What does he mean by "Europe is gone" ?

@splishsplash idk, I won't ask him. Pretty sure my mom already went behind my back to tell him to shut up about certain topics I have personal experience with. 😅 I'll keep things stable like this and just ignore it.

As putin is an avowed christian, sopported in his aggressive imperialism by the russian orthodox church, maybe we sould all be better off if your brother were correct.

Sometimes it's easier to give into the fear mongering than to swim against the tide and engage in critical thought.

Give him a link to my latest thread. I want to know what he thinks of that.

They go so far down these rabbit holes they don't even think about what they're saying -even means-. It's just words to trigger emotional reaction.
That's depressing though beacuse it's such a ludicrously insane thing to say.

A key part of being a Christian in America is pretending to be persecuted as hobby
MethDozer · M
@CountScrofula It makes perfect sense when you look at materially. Acknowledging any real pockets of oppression would only serve to minimize their ability to create the illusion of their own.

@CountScrofula To be fair Islam is very much the same in this regard. There's something about the later two Abrahamjc religions desperately wanting to paint any lack of special privilege as oppression.
