With streaming services available. most people probably do not. However is it still worth having the physical media? Some have been buying vinyl, though at outrageous prices in my opinion.

I still buy music on CDs, and then rip them onto a hard drive. In fact I have been buying used CDs off from eBay and enlarging my collection. One seller offers 100 assorted CDs without cases of a wide variety of musical.genres for under $20. That is less than buying 2 musical releases on digital.

Anyway, any thoughts?

OverTheHill · 56-60, M
@Matt85 I bought an external optical drive for 20 bucks that allows me to rip and burn cds.
Matt85 · 36-40, M
@OverTheHill I might get one. Do they plug into USB?
OverTheHill · 56-60, M
@Matt85 Yes. You can get them off Amazon.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
I still listen to music on CDs and LP records as well as having a number of DVDs.
I don’t use streaming services (though I’m considering them for my TV).
I recently got a Blu-Ray player when my old CD/VCR player broke down (I had very few VCR tapes anyway).
OverTheHill · 56-60, M
@DragonFruit There is a vcr with vcr tapes in the basement.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
@OverTheHill We’re moving into a 55+ condo unit, so we’re downsizing....everything will be on 1 floor (no basement and no upstairs). I’m taking the CDs, LPs and DVDs, but not getting another VCR ("Turn on my VCR, same one I’ve had for years”...but not any more).

Yes I do. I'm blessed to have a car with a cassette player in it still. I still have my case full of those ready to go for car rides.
deepblacknothingness · 56-60, M
@OverTheHill What year is it? My car is a 91
OverTheHill · 56-60, M
@deepblacknothingness 2007. I was surprised it had a tape and cd player in it.
deepblacknothingness · 56-60, M
@OverTheHill im surprised too for being 07

Yes. I listen to music on most formats. Vinyl, shellac, cassette tapes and CD, all of which are in my collection. I also listen online, via a soundbar. As for moving things from one format to another, I do that with shellac and cassette tape for portability purposes.

I have never had eight-track; even in their heyday around fifty years ago, they were only ever a 'thing' for car audio, and it never made sense to buy in a format that could only be played in a car. Eight-track went the way of Betamax.
OverTheHill · 56-60, M
@supersnipe I do remember they had some portable play3rs too. I didn't like having so long to hear a favorite song again.

supersnipe · 61-69, M
@OverTheHill Interesting! Never seen those before. Where I am (UK) I've only seen car players, and very occasionally someone would have a stand-alone player hooked up to their home audio.
ffony · M
@supersnipe Haha, I remember shellac records (they belonged to my parents') AND the Humber Supersnipe! But I only had an Austin Seven.

In my van on MP3 CDs
All services are pushing to be forever costs like your utilities & garbage.

If you like the idea of never owning anything and paying ever-increasing costs for access to "your" stuff...be my guest.

You should also lease cars and rent housing.
deadgerbil · 22-25, F
I don't have a CD player. I've moved on from physical stuff. I don't buy any physical games either, I just download them now
OverTheHill · 56-60, M
@deadgerbil I download almost all pc games. For the Nintendo, i still pick up physical media.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
Kind of, not really. I have a CD collection I ripped mp3s from. I listen on an mp3 player and have nearly 11,000 songs

(That I didn't get all from CDs!)
Jarffff · 46-50
Not anymore, i've sold my soul to YouTube.
OverTheHill · 56-60, M
@Jarffff I watch and listen to music there as well.
Jarffff · 46-50
@OverTheHill So many treasures to be found!!
Bewilderbeeste · 61-69, M
Yes, without that silly apostrophe.
SeaGlass · F
No, I ripped them all to my laptop music library, shared them across multiple devices, then sold the cds
Finally traded in my '07 last year, so I no longer need to play them on a drive. It's all mp3s and oggs now
Occasionally, because some music is not available to download.
