Just starting to learn how to play guitar

Playing a musical instrument is one of the things I wanted to do for a long time.
As a child I used to play flute. But for more than 30 years my ex made hobbies very difficult or impossible. Now I can do things I like again. And even though I am over 50 now, I think it is never to late to start something new.
Northerner · 70-79, M
I have been trying to play the guitar most of my life. i am still no good but I will not give up.lol

Good luck to you.
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@Northerner Thank you!

Aside from the usual practice/practice advice - be sure your guitar is the right size for you, has the right strings and is properly adjusted...it's worth the extra effort and doesn't necessarily cost too much...this helps make it more fun...

@Tamara68 I had a old flat top Martin steel string acoustic guitar thatigave my grandson. It just sat in his room unplayed for a few years. Then, one day, he started playing it and a new world opened for him. It made an amazing difference.
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@samueltyler2 That is great! I bought a steel-string acoustic guitar too.
Skitzo · 56-60, M
@samueltyler2 some martins can be worth mega bucks. My 2nd wife searched for her grandads guitar that was auctioned when he had gotten sick. To her it was "her grandpas guitar". To a collector it was priced at over $200k. A member of lynard skynard had it displayed in his collection of gibson les pauls.

You seem to have learned a very important life lesson with this new endeavor.
It's never to late for most any thing non-biological.
I hate when people say I am too old to start now.

I play guitar. I have since I was around 11 or 12.
It can be a bit overwhelming at the start but it is so worth it to stick to it.
It has gotten me through some tough times and it has always been a comfort.
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@Dainbramadge Yes people say that too easily. If you keep doing new things no matter how old you are, you will live life to the fullest. Better not start acting old before you actually are.
Being creative in one way or an other is extremely important to me. I am glad I can do so again.
Keep trying!

I taught myself the guitar and how to read music when I was about 19….

I played guitar when younger. I found it easy to play by ear, since many of the chords were easy to pick up. Two of my grandsons play guitar. One will be going to a music college to further his study. He prefers electric guitar, and bass, although he does play standup acoustic bass. I changed to the trombone and now play in 3 bands.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
How is it going? I play trombone in 3 bands, many of the others started playing after retirement. We are there for fun, never will be able to earn a living, but we are good enough to play concerts for preschools, senior citizens and other long term care facilities
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@samueltyler2 I had to take a pause, but starting up again. Occasionally hitting the right strings 😊
LibertineWolf · 51-55, M
Get an electric. Like a decent Ibanez. The strings are nice and low and easy to fret. Doesnt require so much effort in pressing down on the strings to make a good sound. I started with a shitty no name acoustic when i was 12 yrs old and almost gave up until i found a playable guitar
OldBrit · 61-69, M
I have played all my life you couldn't have made a better choice
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Tamara68 it'll come.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Tamara68 I used to play oboe at school I've thought about getting one again and trying that again
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@OldBrit go for it!
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Do you have a bucket list? A guitar is a great instrument to start with.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Tamara68 Is it gas or electric? The last visit to Europe, we noticed a much better availability of charging stations, many free, in the countries we visited than in the US.
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@samueltyler2 Mine is gas. Electric cars are still more expensive than gas. In the last few years the charging stations have increased a lot. A few years ago there was almost nothing in Belgium.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Tamara68 I lease my car, but the tax advantages given me brought the price of the plug in electric car i drive, almost $70 USD cheaper then the identical gas version. Now i average over 100 miles per gallon.
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
I play the guitar in a less than conventional manner.
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@JohnnySpot Can you explain to me the way you play it?
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
@Tamara68 Basically, I can only play tribal rhythms on one string.
Tres13 · 51-55, M
Yes I’ve seen you on YouTube @JohnnySpot
splendid · 41-45, M
Yes, you can do it! I love your spirit. I hope you are still playing!
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@splendid yes still playing. Taking lessons now. Progress is slow.
splendid · 41-45, M
@Tamara68 Good for you! I'm glad you're still at it. Progress is always good.
Bless2018 · 41-45, M
It’s never late. I heard stories of people started new adventures after 60
xinbaba · 61-69, M
Good for you! The guitar is fun and satisfying! I wish you well.
xinbaba · 61-69, M
Are you taking lessons or just YouTubing it?
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@xinbaba I am starting with an online course that I found. There are two that seem fairly good. One free course from justinguitar and a course from Paul Davids. That one is not free but does look more inspiring. I will just start with justinguitar and see how it goes. I will take private lessons if I feel that this is not working well.
jackson55 · M
Good for you, practice, practice, practice.
Scubayoda · 46-50, M
Never to late to learn an instrument
You are right! You can! Please pursue these dreams! You will be greatly rewarded by personal satisfaction and the delight of creating music! I play several instruments and am self taught on all of them. I still add new instruments now and then and I am older than you!
Galanr40 · 61-69, M
Good for you, you are never too old ..
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
Don't give up!🙂
LibertineWolf · 51-55, M
Love to play!
daydeeo · 61-69, M
How's it going Tamara? Still playing?
daydeeo · 61-69, M
@Tamara68 yes, that's why I quit when I was a kid. Those steel strings were just too much for my tender fingers.
In my 20s and 30s I played trumpet, that was fun. Now I just stick with singing.
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@daydeeo Singing is great too!
daydeeo · 61-69, M
@Tamara68 I love to sing😄
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
Its great you now have both the freedom and time to learn the guitar.
Sadly, I have no musical ability what so ever so it's not something I could try myself.
Scubayoda · 46-50, M
A former student of mine started at 84. It helped with the arthritis in his hands too
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
How is it going?
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Tamara68 can you play any tunes yet?
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@samueltyler2 just chords. I play along with songs on chordify.net
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Tamara68 i will need to look at that. I use smartmusic to play and learn with. It is structured for learning. I think it's name changed recently. I used to play at folk festivals, chords and songs. I was not a rock band player, we didn't even dream of the electricity nic guitars available now b
Filho · 36-40, M
agree
its never too late
I will start guitar soon
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
How is it going,?
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
I'm a drummer, but I always played guitar a little bit. I'm only OK, but it's fun. You'll have to be wary of your nails and getting blisters, but it's worth it. :)
HotPizza71 · 51-55, M
I've tried the 🎸,but still hopeless,maybe I should just try to learn to ride a motorcycle instead!
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
@HotPizza71 That's an idea, you have the right age for that. But it sounds less musical.
HotPizza71 · 51-55, M
@Tamara68 you strum it,and I will Rev it🎸😀😳
