Movies desensitizing? Is it worth it?

Does watching a scary movie desensitize people, to the point where the more often you watch it the less scared you will be? Is it a good thing to desensitize yourself? I often thought it makes you more cynical and paranoid in life. I feel like i am too innocent for scary movies, they are all too scary for me and i dont want it to effect my personality in a negative way like i dont want to get ptsd from it. I dont watch anything scary and then i think will i be scared of anything thriller my whole life like this everyone will be fine and my cortisol levels will go up. I am definetly not a gryffindor.

I don't think so. But maybe you're just not into them? And that's ok if you'd rather watch other things. But they can provide a way of thinking about things, circumstances, situations and relationships which you might miss out on if you never experience them.

Did you know a lot of stars get their start from horror movies? Kevin Bacon was in the first Friday the 13th movie for example.

I generally don't let fear control my life or my choices. I am afraid of getting eaten by a lion ao I don't have any plans to go to Africa. I am afraid when watching final destination, but I do it anyway if I'm in the mood.

So... That's it. Fear of fear is a very negative thing when it stops you from rtying new things or things with friends.

It doesn't work like that on all people. Maybe some will get desensitized but on others it might have the opposite effect. If you think about people who filter real stuff on social media, many of them develop PTSD instead of getting more immune to such content.

I think as long as you can distinguish reality from what you see on t.v. it's ok to watch those kinds of things, but to some people it makes them cynical and paranoid and dangerous.

I've never liked horror movies either and I don't watch them.

Quite on the contrary. I'm highly sensitized after watching a scary movie.
Many years ago, I watched the first "Phantasm" movie at the theatre, and I had wo walk home on my own, through the woods, in the darkness. The dwarf slaves were everywhere. I almost shat my pants.

I love horror movies. To add to the equation I will have black licorice which is a good trigger for nightmares.
@minoltaguy i did not know black licorice does that

I dunno. I watch a lot of darker media and things still get to me sometimes. Saw bothered me immensely.

I think there is a threshold issue like with many things. It keeps taking more

The more you can, what you so called desensitize yourself, the closer to reality you become.

It's not really desensitisation though. It's an attempt at understand things that are foreign to you. In understanding you become changed.

Change is in everything. That is reality. No change is a fiction. No change is non existence.

Non existence itself is a abominable horror.

I don't watch horror movies, I just don't find them entertaining.

Its when your watching shows/movies about serial killers and go: 'Amateurs, I could have done a better job', wait what?'

People in horror movies always make bad decisions. Lol. If ever in one of those life and death decisions you can say i saw this in a movie once. Hiding behind the chain saws is not a good pick. 😜
