What are the birds at the end scene at the ending of Jurassic Park and why are they shown ?

Maybe it has something to do with the mindset that "birds are living dinosaurs." Maybe the movie character is smiling because he believes that the dinosaurs later evolved into harmless (in most cases) birds.
