Mobland: accent debacle

I saw a trailer for the TV series "Mobland" in which Pierce Brosnan plays an Irish character with a questionable choice of accent, which has baffled me because this man is from Ireland. Granted he moved away when he was young, surely there's some part of him that can recall how to do his native accent. This man is from Navan for Christ sake.

LOL

My late wife was German but later in life a friend's very German mother (visiting from Spandau) told her she spoke German like a tourist ( perhaps because she now almost exclusively spoke English for years).

But when she lost her temper, she spoke perfect German!
Brosnan is saying he modeled his Mobland accent on tapes of a particular Irish politician from Kerry, so far unnamed.

I don't know enough about Irish accents to judge, but if Ireland has half as much regional variation as the UK, there might be wild differences between Dublin, Kerry, and Navan.

I went to see "Blue Road: The Edna O'Brien Story" a couple of days ago - even after 70-odd years of living in London she hadn't lost her Irish accent. 🤗

Someone asked him about him "losing" his accent awhile back; he said it’s stronger when he’s speaking to other Irish people. But I imagine you can really hear the difference.

I think often that lies in the hands of the director...
