I'm a big fan of the books and the first 5 seasons of GoT. I actually liked both seasons of HotD. But I guess you could say I'm biased.
The only helpful advice I can offer is that I liked the first one more than the second. If you don't like the first one, well, you know.
As for what @basilfawlty89 said about GoT, if you're going in with fresh eyes, you can be ok watching till the end of season 7. Lol, I personally hated 6-7 and 8.
For me watching season 8 was the equivalent of watching the reaction videos when the upstart Dallas Cowboys lost to my lowly Green Bay Packers in the 2024 playoffs.
I was practically pulling out my hair. 😭

I do feel the high points were seasons 1-4 though.
