Watching Juraj Herz's 1968 masterpiece The Cremator, currently ranked #4 in My Film Canon

I invited dad to watch The Cremator with me, and he ended up telling me of all the people he knew who were cremated. Was too dark for him. The vibe of this Czech classic is what matters to me, a doomy dreaminess, fatalism, dark surrealism, and the music, that was done by the same guy who did the music for Fruit of Paradise and most of Jan Svankmajer's short films. Catchy circus kind of tunes with a hint of that broken down novelty that things are from the past. A society of decay.

Art films weren't valued by the people living in the countries they were made in, at least in places like Italy. The mainstream that never gets to Criterion and other labels, that bothers me a little, i'd like to see the mainstream Czech films from the 60s, they'd be fun i think, or at least interesting.

Dispensing with my stupid goals i am freed up to watch my favorite films properly, or as close to proper as i can, i can never really see them properly which would be to live in a huge city that has theatres that often have retrospectives. And even if i did i'd have to give up smoking.

1st world problem guy is who i am, i feast on the sublimely macabre, the hell of the past and of others is my paradise.
