Bilbo Baggins had to be a male for the plot of *The Hobbit* to work. If Bilbo were female, everything would have fallen apart in the goblin cave. Bilbo would have wandered around the dark and dreary caverns, found the ring, and seen Gollum fishing, just like in the original plot. But then trouble would arise during the riddles in the dark.
This is where everything would break down. While Bilbo may have gotten lucky and answered the first few riddles, a female Bilbo couldn’t possibly win like male Bilbo. The problem with a female Bilbo playing the riddle game is quite clear. Sure, she might be clever, but even if she were very lucky, she’d never think to ask, “What have I got in my pockets?” Or even if she did, Gollum would have gotten the answer right. Because we all know that women’s clothes don’t have actual pockets, and they often use their bras to store things.
