Eyes Wide Shut unfinished masterpiece or hidden truth? My follow up thoughts
I finally wanted to share my follow up thoughts on Eyes Wide Shut after sitting with it a bit longer.
Overall I did enjoy the movie. But I completely understand why so many people feel it is unfinished. There are multiple moments that feel like they are pointing toward something bigger that we never actually see resolved.
For example, after Bill attends the secret society ritual, he later returns to the gates and receives that warning note from the masked men. Some interpretations suggest that Kubrick may have intended that note to imply something far darker, possibly involving the daughter, and that later edits after his death removed or softened that implication. We do see the daughter walk away with two men at the end, which has fueled a lot of theories about whether she was meant to be offered in some way.
Another theory I have seen is that Alice’s final line about them needing to have sex could symbolize them trying to reconnect or even replace what was lost. Her emotional processing of everything Bill experienced feels very muted on screen, and some viewers interpret that as intentional, like we are only seeing part of the truth. There is also the long standing question of whether parts of the film are meant to feel dreamlike or even possibly imagined.
Then there is the broader conversation people are having now, especially with modern discussions about elite circles and exploitation scandals. I have always considered myself somewhat open minded when it comes to conspiracy theories, not in the sense that I believe everything, but in the sense that I do not automatically dismiss things either. If enough patterns or synchronicities align, I do not find certain possibilities impossible. Truth can be stranger than fiction.
One personal reaction I had is that I really did not enjoy the chanting and ritual music during the ceremony scenes. I am someone who is very spiritually sensitive, and hearing prolonged chanting or ritualistic sounds in media can feel uncomfortable to me, almost like I am absorbing something I do not understand. I actually wanted to mute parts of it. I am curious if anyone else experienced that sense of unease or feeling pulled in.
Outside of the theories, I thought the film did something very interesting with marriage. The conversations between Bill and Alice felt raw and honest, the way desire, jealousy, fantasy, and commitment all exist together inside long term relationships. Watching them both confront attraction outside their marriage while still remaining bound to each other was one of the most compelling parts of the film for me.
So I am curious what others think.
Do you feel the film is unfinished or intentionally ambiguous?
What is your take on the conspiracy interpretations?
Do you consider yourself open to conspiracy theories, skeptical, or somewhere in between?
And did anyone else feel unsettled by the ritual scenes?
Please keep discussion respectful. I know people come at this film from very different perspectives, and I enjoy hearing all of them.
Would love to hear your thoughts.
