(possible spoilers?) Like why couldn't Ellie have invited a third party to the mix . You know, loosed the infected in to help her take revenge. The fanatical scar people. They would have considered her a demon in human skin. Like dude. Have her infiltrate and cause chaos to get to her quarry. There were still no acid spitting bloaters. Why not have the stalkers use the network stationary mycelium to start sending messages. 'Ellie has no gun, why is it just standing there. The infected stalker places it's hand on the mycelium and looks around. It closes and opens it's hand once then 2 times. Then pushes it's hand toward Ellie's group.
