Depends on the movies your watching. American Movies have been going down hill for awhile now. The Australian and British are good but not what the yanks are used to. The French can come up with some gems. As well as the Asian films. The Swedish have some good ones. If you don't mind reading all the way through.

I remember an interview with Roger Ebert where he talked about the psychology of expectations going into a movie. People who are really psyched to see a movie are more likely to be disappointed and rate a movie lower than people who went in with lower expectations. With movie tickets being so expensive, my speculation is that the vast majority of moviegoers are highly motivated by their expectations and excitement to see said movie while casuals are less likely to roll dice on it. Those initial reviews and audience ratings can sink a movie quickly in the public’s eye.
I’m not saying that I don’t think the quality of movies is waning, because I definitely prefer older movies to newer ones. I think the downturn in quality combined with the unmet expectations of the diehards who still go to the movies is a bad formula for the movie industry, though.

Most good movies are a one time miracle, like maybe something they've been thinking about and wanting to make their whole lives. It's extremely complex.

Movies are subjective. It's not like a phone which can objectively work well or poorly.

@BohemianBabe yeah but on rating sites most movies are rated low.

@cyberdude28 People have diverse taste. It's hard to make a movie that appeals to people across the population.

Maybe you are checking out the wrong type of movies 😅

Because no one can come up with an original idea. All Hollywood ever does is remake after remake. After a while no one wants to see that garbage. Poor acting doesn't help either.

@Musicman I think studios are the worst copycats bc of the cost of making a movie.

I think it’s really hard to make a good movie, you have to find a really good story and do everything right?. There have been so many movies… what is there left to do?
