This is how I feel they should have done the Terminator series?

Instead of making a bunch of sequels after T2, there should have been a different series connected to the movies. We know Sarah Connor finds out about Skynet and the future war from Kyle Reese, there should have been a movie that showed August 29, 1997 (original nuclear war date) and the aftermath with the survivors trying to survive Skynets extermination attempts. The beginnings of the war could be shown and eventually John Connor becoming Leader of the Resistance. There could be a show that chronicled several years of the war and then a movie showing the final years of it. This movie would show Skynets defeat in 2029, show Kyle Reese being sent to 1984 and the T-800 being sent to 1995 setting up the events of the first two movies. I like some parts of T3 and the Sarah Connor Chronicles but I think this way would have been a good way to handle the Terminator series. Terminator 2 has an alternate ending where the machines never take over that could have been the canon ending.

@helenoftroy2000 I mean something that would have not necessarily followed T2 but started off August 29, 1997 and ending in 2029 the original time of the future war. It would end with Kyle Reese being sent back to 1984.

@storykid But then, if you know the beginning and you know the ending...there can be no mystery or suspense...that's why the others failed
The Christian bale terminator and the Clair Danes terminator movies did nothing to advance the story at all.

They both just did what you described..
Bale:
Kyle meets Reece.. big woop.

Danes: sky net becomes self aware

Will they did show Kyle Reese going back. They showed how John became the leader. They even show how skynet was defeated
