I think it is because he knew that society would never fully accept them as a couple....more specifically, society would never accept him.

He had a kind soul, but as "the other" was rejected by society, with the exception of a few....much like the Boris Karloff Frankenstein monster in the first 2 films. Little Maria and the blind hermit showed him kindness and acceptance, all others did not.
