He was a very good actor, but by 1963 his health was failing and he often mucked up his lines. But he is still my favourite Doctor.

@Bushranger Mark Gatiss wrote a brilliant TV play about it which was broadcast on one of the big Anniversaries - can't remember which one. David Bradley played Hartnell wonderfully.

@Bushranger I saw him in Pantomime at Taunton on 1967,

After leaving Doctor Who, suffering, unbeknownst to him, from the effects of arteriosclerosis, William continued to take work both on stage and television, but never on film again.

His last stage appearance was in pantomime over the festive period 1966-67, playing Buskin the Fairy Cobbler in Puss in Boots at the Gaumont Theatre in Ipswich, and the Odeon Theatres in Southend, Cheltenham,
and Taunton.

@Thomas52 I love David Bradley in that role. He's also in a First Doctor podcast, but he doesn't muff the lines like Hartnell did, I'd love it if he did.

I've got a hypothesis that the first Doctor you see is your favourite. It was Hartnell in the original series and Christopher Eccleston in the new one. Mind you, I also think that Christopher is a fantastic actor so that helps.

@devonman Was he good? I imagine that he'd really ham it up and do a proper job in a panto.

@Bushranger He was an experienced character actor, so playing in a house full of kids would have been a doddle. My memory is dim, but I think he was able it ham it up in 'Mother Goose'.
WalterF · 70-79, M
@Bushranger Agreed. The first you see is the only one for you. Cf Sean Connery, the only Bond for me.
Thomas52 · 70-79, M
@WalterF Although I liked Hartnell and it was strange at first when he left...I mean regenerated...I actually preferred Patrick Troughton and he was always my favourite of the original series.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
@WalterF I was never a big Bond fan, but dean Connery was brilliant in everything he did.

@Thomas52 My next favourite in the original series was John Pertwee. But a lot of that may have been because of Katy Manning as his companion.

@Bushranger Adolescence can to that to a boy!!
