Look, I'm not saying I don't want to see characters of color.

I just don't understand why y'all can't create original characters instead of race switching existing ones just for the sake of artificial diversity. Are we saying Hollywood writers are that unoriginal and hacky?
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Pretty much. Hollywood is in a trap where the only new stuff that gets greenlight is rehashes of existing IP, but at the same time there's basic principles of diversity at play and that means just doing the same shit but ticking some diversity boxes.

So it feels particularly cynical and artificial rather than just say, writing new stories. Want some black characters? Well get some black writers some jobs and see what they wanna do. Jordan Peele is one of the the most exciting directors in cinema for a reason, right.
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
Honestly I don’t care if they want to change most of the characters races, just not Snow White. She had an actual cannon description that most others lack…hair as black as ravens, skin as white as snow and lips as red as rubies. I don’t recall Cinderella being described in the books as a blonde caucasian, that was just a choice made for the screen.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Zaphod42 I just think it shows a lack of originality. You don't just take a character that's been canonically one way for half a century, change something about their physical appearance, and not expect some backlash.

Was Scooby-Doo a bit monochromatic? Yeah. But the way to fix that isn't to change established characters.

At the same time, I'm not going to be defining my entire personality around being annoyed by this.
This also extends to other representation. Empowering disabled people is not pretending being blind is actually a super power. Or putting someone in a wheelchair so an ableist can have a redemption arc when they eventually see them as a person.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I agree. A lot of ableist shit in these movies. I'd like to see a movie about a blind person who just gets frustrated about being blind, and eventually adjusts to the new reality.

I would like to see more diversity besides color and sexuality. Such as people with physical disabilities , people with Down syndrome and other genetic disorders, religion diversity as well.

@Abstraction oh i agree. Ive seen it happen to schools, local businesss etc. All who started off with, and practiced a great ethos .
Untill they got bought out, or merged.
The thing with creative industries , is they should be run by creative people . Choose the right people for the job.
I mean, ive seen in local news too often, how charities and local support agencies have gone bankrupt within 2 years of applying for a new CEO. Guess where the money went ?

Ive felt for years that society has become reduced to numbers and not people.
And its only getting worse .😞

They can bring unity just fine without fucking with my childhood memories.

Ah, yes, the lily White era of yesterday. I wonder how some people would react, if on Judgment Day, they saw that all of the angels and God were Black? That would be a hilarious sight.

They are unoriginal and hacky, yes.
That would require effort. Capitalism incentizes the most low effort and largest profit return. Creativity is irrelevant.

There should be equal opportunities to all, depending on merit only
Basically, yes. But Hollywood isn’t always hiring the people who would write such stories, or if someone tries, they may not be in an environment where it’s welcomed.

I grew up without fairy tales where any of the protagonists looked like me. So very possibly I can’t feel your pain here. That was a world where almost everybody on tv, from the shows to the commercials, cartoons, to even the news reporters, were white. If someone black was appearing on one of the variety shows, or when the “Julia" show was on the air, relatives and friends were on the phone letting each other know. It was that big a deal.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@bijouxbroussard I wouldn't be surprised if they were.
@LordShadowfire I do agree with that. I don’t have much use for reboots on GP; if the story was well-told the first time, why reinvent the wheel ? The thing that bugs me, though, are people who are selective about their outrage: the same people who would pitch a fit about Idris Elba as Bond probably saw no incongruity with Willem Dafoe playing Semitic, Middle Eastern Jesus Christ
(Not accusing you of that, just saying).
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@bijouxbroussard Yeah. My thing is, if you're going to be mad about a traditionally white character being played by a different race, you should also get mad when it goes the other way.
Shadow, why you stirring the pot? 😅
I dont know why they are redoing movies they have aleady done .

There are billions of stories out there; myths, legends, amazing books, histories and fantasies .
So many genres to choose from .

And yet ......do- overs seem the rage .
Do -overs with some new little tweak to make it a "thing".

I dont get it. Hollywood has incredible resources to create movie magic, and the money to do it.
I some times wonder if its become such an 'in house ' industry , that many people in it have been chosen by 'who they know', rather than their abiltiy to be imaginative .
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@OogieBoogie I'm telling you. I've seen more creative shit put out by some dude in his basement and uploaded to YouTube.

As long as no one pretends them changing the skin color means anything, either pro or anti, I don't really care.. I just won't watch a recap lol

The moment someone says it's good or bad that's when it becomes more complicated.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@MartinTheFirst I don't like the idea of changing the race of an established character that's been around for a long time. Whether the original character was white, black, or purple with green polka dots, is irrelevant. Changing that detail of a character for no other reason than to do so strikes me as dumb.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@LordShadowfire yeah but the reason why we're talking about it is because people had stupid reasons for doing so, not just because the objective fact that they changed it... See, it gets complicated

I have a pitch

Let's remake Miami Vice again, and now Crockett is Black and Tubbs is white
