Im sure The Mob didn't want the attention that the movie would generate. Mobsters were not high profile at that time.

A little know fact is that the Mob, that controlled the longshoreman Union, was tapped by the War Department to provide coastal security during WWII. No numbers exist but many efforts were made by Germany to infiltrate espionage agents into the US east coast. Many “floaters” were found showing signs of German origin and mob hits.

The part I found chilling was when Sal Tessio is about to go for his last ride. He says to his old friend, "Tom, can you get me off the hook? For old time's sake?"

Did the producer make the mobster "an offer he couldn't refuse?"
