Who is/was the best movie villain ever?

I would nominate Phillip Van Damm played by James Mason in the Hitchcock film North by Northwest. He manages to be charming, vicious, sensitive, smart, scary and clever. I had no doubt he seriously meant to throw his unfaithful girlfriend (Eva Marie Saint) out of his plane at night 20,000 feet over the Pacific Ocean. Forcing the man he believed was his enemy to drink booze and then putting him into a car on a twisting mountain road at night was also pretty clever. I really didn't think Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) was going to survive him.

Robert Mitchum in the original version of Cape Fear was pretty damn good as a villain. Another one was Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West. One thing that made Fonda's portrayal of an evil character so effective is that it went completely counter to the usual good guys he played in films.

Even better in Night Of The Hunter...@Rutterman

@therighttothink50 Great. Thank you.
Nurse Ratchet in One flew over a cuckoos nest because she is such a covert narcissist & dangerous but pretends shes a caring nurse. That makes her bloody dangerous. Also the film where Al Pacino is the Devil.

James Mason playing Phillip Van Damm, the villain of the Hitchcock movie North by Northwest. So evil, so intelligent, perceptive and charming. And scary! Killing the hero, the Cary Grant character, is a minor chore for Van Damm and he rather enjoys it, too. He reminded me a little bit of my mother.

@romper69 I agree with Mitchum in Night of the Hunter. A very awful and scary villain.

Raymond Burr in Rear Window. He's believably evil in a real-world sense of things.

Lee Marvin in “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence” may be worth a mention. Also “Hud” played by Paul Newman, a really different kind of movie for its day.

@therighttothink50 I grew up around people like that, clever witty spoiled intellectuals. They're a lot funnier in a movie than in real life.
