Honestly, if they are a narcissist, I'd do everything I could to not speak with them again, unless I had to.
In this event, if you have to apologize, make it about how you failed to live up to your own expectations and minimize any focus upon the narcissist.
It may seem cold, but the last thing you should do is make them a central focus for anything.
