KiwiDan Yeah, I've found benefit from those too.
I've found:
- therapy depends on the therapist and the quality of one's connection,
- meditation - what works best for me is Vipassana, esp. the kind that alternates sitting and walking
plus putting the precepts into action in daily life
- talking to people - not necessarily about what's going on with me (unless they ask) - mainly about whatever
interests them the most in their lives. It takes me out of myself for a while and helps create connection.
I've been prone to periodic major depressions since I was sixteen.
An SSRI helps me get over the worst in a bad one.
To help me avoid going into depressions I find help in the following:
- daily exercise, esp going out for a walk, or dancing to music if the weather is bad.
- healthy diet with right portion size, and 2 Ls water per day
- 7-8 hrs sleep per day
- basic self care, like brushing teeth, hot shower, etc
- not over working or over doing things, esp on hot days
- turning away from negative thoughts, usually through attention to current task, or distraction/entertainment
I find nothing works perfectly, but taken together they all mount up and help a great deal -
enough that I'm now 68 and can imagine surviving to the end of my natural life.
Sometimes depression can be about feeling trapped in a situation one can't escape. If that's the case, it's worth thinking outside the box to find solutions.
I'm happy to chat if you wish.
