Don't listen to them.
Give your grief its due.
As an elvish king said, it hurts because it was real. Others may not fathom our complex feelings when a person dies; how are they to know how crushed we are when we lose a beloved pet?
So DO cry and give expression to the full range and depth of your feelings.
But also remember the light of that life, and let THAT constellation of bright memories be the light which you carry with you, every day, as you take the best of your pet with you always...
