Because taking pills tells your brain that it's something you can't control. Not being in control doesn't feel good, especially when you're already depressed and presumably have low self-esteem. It's just one more thing you can't manage, and your brain tells you all kinds of lies about what that means about you as a person.

If you take a pill to deal with stomach acid, it doesn't make you a bad person. If you take a pill for depression, it doesn't make you a bad person. Needing help does not make you a bad person. It makes you a person who needs help.
