Please don’t take this personally but why do most people treat autistic adults like children?

I mean that needs to stop! They are ADULTS!!! Not children. Talk to them like adults. If they do something out of line and whatever, call them out! Cuss them out! They’re adults so they should be able to handle adult conversations and we shouldn’t have to apologize for cursing around them. Be blunt! If they throw a meltdown, don’t give a shit! If it’s children fine but adults COME ON! Don’t sugarcoat it. Tell the the hard, painful truth. They have to face it. Just because they’re autistic doesn’t mean you need to sugarcoat shit. I am so sick and tired of seeing or hearing people talk to autistic adults like children! I’m fed up! If they ask for the truth, give it to them straight and bluntly. If they’re very sensitive and get their feelings hurt, THEY NEED TO GET USED TO IT! They need to experience the hardships and rude people. GET USED TO IT AUTISTIC PEOPLE! You don’t get special treatment just because you’re “special needs”. Autistic children and teens need tough love too! Stop making excuses just because they have autism. Well, SOMEONE had to say someone! Don’t come at me!

I worked with Autistic adults for a couple years. It was some time ago. NO ONE understood Autism and we dealt with them incorrectly until there was more information. I have scars on my arms because they were so angry and frustrated and misunderstood The people I worked with were thrown into Institutions,they threw anyone in there, Downs syndrome, Epileptics, depressed people. None of those folks should have been there! Autism is just now coming into the light,still not enough information or understanding though. I know it's frustrating to be misunderstood but, when someone treats you like a child, instead of getting angry and expecting everyone to understand Autism, it is your DUTY to teach them otherwise...a teachable moment. Educate them. That would be a very mature thing to show them. I know what I'm talking about. I have a physical disability and live in a wheelchair. Sometimes when I am at a restaurant with friends the waitperson will ask one of my friends what I would like to eat, instead of asking me, because since I was in a chair I must be braindead. I enjoyed shocking them by pointing out what they did with a sense of humor. That was a lesson for them. Lower your expectations of people, have a sense of humor and teach them. I don't believe people who treat you that way are being mean...they don't understand.

@fernie2 I don’t give a shit. And autistic people are wondering why they’re getting a laugh that and mocked? I have a cousin that’s on the spectrum and everybody used to pick on her A LOT. May we picked on her so much because she was just funny. Make those stupid faces and when she throws temper tantrum‘s for no reason and we just laugh at her. I picked on her so much to grow and gave her such a hard time but it was just for a joke. All joking she had to get used to humor and jokes because there will be people that will joke with her! We picked on her the most but that’s what made her stronger. When she would cry to her had or her siblings we laugh so ballistic because that she was trying to be funny.
