Dementia is a rapid race to the grave. Schizophrenia is a disease you can live with for decades.
@hippyjoe1955 And, schizophrenia is more prevalent than most people might think. Many schizophrenics learn to adjust in ways which make their condition less noticeable or even invisible to others. There are LOTS of "functional" schizophrenics.

Dementia. No meds for that but there are meds for schizophrenia

My mom had dementia and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone

You can live a decent life with schizophrenia if you are medicated. Dementia is just a slow death to the brain

Dementia. I've watched so many people go down from dementia & I'm beginning to to suffer the way it feels because of an anti-anxiety pill I've been on for 9 years.

@DropTopDig so what are you doing about it?
Myocite · F
I'm dealing with this now. My mom is a walking corpse who only wants to consume massive amounts of food. She's not the person she was and my heart is forever broken.
@Myocite I'm presuming this is dementia she's dealing with?
Myocite · F
@PhoenixPhail yes, it is.
Myocite · F
@PhoenixPhail at least that's what the informal diagnosis is.

Both are horrifying based on experience

I'm thinking Schizophrenia. Dementia would be a struggle for sure, but schizophrenia would be more difficult to live with.

My opinion is dementia both for the family and the person who has dementia. The person has lost there memory of the family
Dementia because you don't just lose the memories of those you love, you lose your identity and sense of self too.

schizophrenia, more threatening to yourself and others. Good that there's treatment still

Both are really sad.

I would rather have died and gone to Heaven than to experience the hell of schizophrenia and wonder if I'm going to spend eternity in hell!
I think it would depend on the degree of either.
But generally, I would think dementia would be worse, and much more frustrating and debilitating.
@Myocite That's understandable. I know it's hard. My grandmother had it. I couldn't even talk with her. And I know it was terribly frustrating to her, not being able to find words. I'm so sorry. ♥

@PhoenixPhail Thank you. I'm realizing how strong I have to be as I mourn my mom's death yet have to completely take over her disastrous life. We don't live in the same stare and I was unaware of her deterioration until recently.
@Myocite We can always talk in PM. I want to keep up with you about this. 💞

Trying to get off the meds that cause it. Its hard bc I they're highly addictive

I've dealt extensively with dementia, multiple relatives.
I have one relative with schizophrenia I think but he was diagnosed before I was born and he has been stabl ish kind of for many years now so I don't know if that diagnosis was correct
It depends on the situation and dynamics but I'd say that schizophrenia is worse.
Both are terrible

Both suck...

But........ Alzheimer's doesn't have anything to control it....

I wouldn't wish it on the world's worst enemy.
