Why is it many people seem unaware of the hurtful things they do

i personally noticed that people who are insecure or in some sort of pain/trauma seem to be most self centered and apathetic towards others.

Dependent of happiness on external things is also might be cause ! External things are fragile.

Lots of factors of course, but I know some people who grew up being told that being nice or apologizing, etc makes you look weak. Sort of like you bringing up pain/trauma, I think some act mean as some sort of defense mechanism at times or a lack of empathy or even sympathy.

@sahi81 It's probably a factor with many people but not always. People can be persuaded and misled and live to bitterly regret it.

@alan20 i believe happiness is a mindset. Some people can't be happy no matter what they have. People who are hurting inside intentionally or unintentionally hurt others around them.

I don't know if it is conscious self-centeredness or more not being able to see the pain they inflict while they try to cope with their own pain.

Still, regardless of why, the pain they inflict hurts.
