how should you deal with people who play 'head games'

obviously you can't get aggressive with them, so what's the very best way to 'deflect' what they do?

It depends on the game. My Mom is very passive-aggressive. I deliberately "misunderstand" her intention, take what she says at face value, and act accordingly.
My ex was a liar and a cheater. I removed myself from that game entirely.
