Why do people follow crazy leaders?

And by crazy I mean like Charles Manson?
Like how the hell did that actually happen?

Why are some people prone to follow someone like that while others aren't?

Probably because they understand what a person is lacking emotionally or otherwise, and give them that. Those types of people are also good at portraying themselves falsely as strong, so people tend to follow. Then you create some fear, and you have some pretty loyal subjects.
