Don't be assuming that "intelligence" can be well represented by a single value!

What we call "IQ" is the largest eigenvector of a high dimensional covariance matrix. Howard Gardner made strong arguments for eight independent dimensions of "intelligence" and there may be more. The largest eigenvector might represent 1/3 of the total observed variation, so ignoring the other components leaves out most of the "intelligence."

I am not unsympathetic to the view, but, in popular culture, it seems as though it is being used like the blue ribbon I used to get for "participating" at an elementary school field day.

@SomeMichGuy I hear ya. But even the SAT tests separately for math & verbal intelligence (assuming the 'A' still stands for 'aptitude'). And I'd claim that for success in the modern workgroup corporate world, so-called "emotional" intelligence is more important than either math or verbal abilities. But there's no easy way to test for it, so the testing industry pretty much pretends it doesn't exist.
