I need a therapist

But I can’t afford one.

Well, this depends on where you live and what you're looking for. You can get top notch care from an LMHC for $20 a session if you have insurance.

If not... If you're in an urban setting, look for a 12-step group targeting your concern, if possible. There are mental health fellowships, obviously addiction fellowships, relationship groups, grief groups, etc. You may find just sitting in a group and telling your stories while hearing others might help. It's not treatment per se, but it's a bunch of people with a lot of experience. Good luck.

I’ve heard about this online therapy that is cheaper than regular therapy.

Often public health centers or universities will offer free counseling services or counseling on a sliding scale. And if they don't, they might be able to point you in the direction of an agency which does.

It might be worth making some calls.
