It’s a myth

I used to see love as a chemical dependency. Neurotransmitters and hormones tickling the pleasure and reward centers of our brain.
Now I realize that there is a massive difference between simply understanding something and actually experiencing it. We can diagnose something like fear by seeing it as a spike in cortisol and adrenaline levels, increased activity in the amygdala, dilated pupils, rapid heartbeat, etc. But to actually feel fear is quite a different story. How do you explain such a primal, overpowering emotion like that?
5 years ago I could say I loved my dog, I loved pizza, I loved Autumn weather. And I could give you a list of reasons why. But now after loving a person in spite of all their flaws and imperfections, I think I can finally summarize what I think love is.
Love is that thing that you want to keep going back to. Love is what you look forward to seeing and what you miss when you're away. Love is what you wish to protect, to help, to see thrive. Love is the parts of yourself you never want to let go of. Love is comfort. Our sense of peace in a chaotic world.

Love changed for me when I had my son. I don't think I really understood until I had him, that love is strength and loyalty.

It's the mix of calm safe familiarity, reliability, tenderness and ability to forgive and raise above petty stuff that would normally drive you crazy with other people. It's something that makes you feel at peace, content and at home.
