If you have nothing to do sexually in your relationship and you are not looking for a life long relationship, then you can ignore the age of your partner.
Otherwise it is going to hurt in later years.

I have had twice in life boyfriends of around 20 years older. The first one we stayed together for five years..the second one was around a year of on and off dating... I believe things can work with age gaps but... for my particular case, i think it was more of a pathological thing, sth like looking for a living father figure of some sort, amongst other things. In exchange, it was as if they needed me to alleviate their darkness and deep loneliness.
I needed that hug and safety back then, but now, looking back at it, I think it would be best to have a friend for that purpose rather than a partner.
In the first case I was overconsumed by the relationship, he "knew everything" and I felt as if there wasn't enough space for me to live and experiment with life...after few years in, i was being so controlled.
And in the second scenario...you might laugh but, his bad coughs at his 50s cause of excessive smoking was not a sexy thing...
Ok these harsh truths being said, I still think not all cases are alike and age difference relationships can work...but needs a level of maturity from both parts...

@being thank you so much for such a detailed reply! This was amazing! I’m glad that it seems like you’ve definitely been on a bit of a journey of self discovery in your choices of partners. It sounds really healthy and positive from your current perspective.

@OneDayMore yes thank you, life's a journey for all and it takes time to see clearly..i try to be faster in seeing 💗
JestAJester · 31-35, M
Younger than me must be 21 (drinking age). Older than me I'd say no more than 5 or 6 years. But its just a range. I prefer someone close to me. But I'm just happy when someone actually pays attention to me
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
I've never gone more than 5 over/under but I probably wouldn't go more than 12 under and 15 over.
OneDayMore · 36-40, M
@Starcrossed that’s some nice numbers. I like that you’d go a bigger gap older than you would younger. That makes sense to me.

My wife's favorite lover (other than me, of course) was 30 years older. Age doesn't matter to me.
SW-User
I'll express the upward limit I almost got involved with, she was 20 years my senior. I likely would be open the other direction with maturity and connection, as I mostly see age as a number.
SW-User
@OneDayMore Honestly, she was a beautiful friend, kindred, but vulnerable, and I couldn't escape her vulnerability.
OneDayMore · 36-40, M
@SW-User that sounds somewhat heartbreaking.
SW-User
@OneDayMore I made a beautiful friend... it's not heartbreaking, it's guidance.

Mine was 20 years and I still miss him sometimes :)
AirForce687 · 36-40, M
I had a boyfriend once who was 10 years younger - I was 31, he was 21.
AirForce687 · 36-40, M
@OneDayMore They even took offence at him washing my face for me before he took me out on a date, a task which i find quite difficult to do myself due to it being part of my disability...
OneDayMore · 36-40, M
@AirForce687 that’s just insane that they would take umbrage with that. Parents are stupid. I’m sorry you had to experience that.
AirForce687 · 36-40, M
@OneDayMore may i message you to talk more about this without clogging up the question page ??

I was considering marrying a few someones ~16-17 yrs older than I.
It was not because of me that the 16byrs old did not happen.
I am more open to a younger woman just because of actuarial reasons, but I see sexy older women too.

When I was 23 dated a guy 55. My relationship now he is 6 yrs older. 25 yr age is ok. Depends on what stage of life we date or meet. Make sure not a gold digger.
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
The youngest was a few years back . Long story but she was 19 but looked 18 if your lucky . Blonde , slim , beautiful .

10 years at Max.
OneDayMore · 36-40, M
Interesting, @Caleidoscope. Respectful a good round number.
Caleidoscope · F
@OneDayMore There's a generation gap over a decade and that adds to the already existing problems in a relationship so better not delve beyond that number.
OneDayMore · 36-40, M
@Caleidoscope I like your reasoning very clever, well thought out.
SW-User
I do not know. Generally i just like them to be of a sound stable mind, with some intelligence and sense of humour.
bijouxbroussard · F
A few years ago I actually dated someone 19 years younger. He was mature, but I had a hard time. I prefer around my age.
OneDayMore · 36-40, M
That’s very honest of you @bijouxbroussard thank you for sharing! And I’m sorry you had a hard time.
bijouxbroussard · F
@SW-User He was great. I was the one who was a tad self- conscious.
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard I was curious, even though you can't form an opinion this way, I was always curious of hers. We do keep in touch, but she's now with her daughter on the west coast (I'm central Canada), and she no longer has the energy to keep connection with many. Not the same, I know. Each relationship is different, each intimacy is different, and I know she was somewhat self-conscious given her health conditions.
Husband is 13 years older than me. Thats enough
OneDayMore · 36-40, M
@Poppies what do you think would be your dating limit?
Poppies · 61-69, F
@OneDayMore No upper limit--old men deserve to have fun, too! I would decide on a case-by-case basis. Lower limit....hmmm.....that's tough. Maybe 45, 50.
OneDayMore · 36-40, M
@Poppies that’s a nice gap! Well done for being so open.

Before I answer, I have to explain. My mother was a nurse most of my childhoid and life for that matter. She always chose to care for the elderly. And she loved being good to them and she was very compassionate in doing so.
I spent most of my childhood summers and weekends listening to these elderly people and having them teach me so much through stories, wisdom and experiences they lived and shared with me. Age has always been just a number for me. I have dated someone 13 years younger than me and been with older women than I when I was in my late teens early 20's like 15 years older 17 years older.
