Im getting to an intense scene in my book

Where the main character cuts off his own hand with a sword to escape. I’ve been looking into how hard it would be and apparently cutting off your own hand is next to impossible. It’s all about angles and how much force you can generate. I was picturing a single sharp cut but apparently thats next to impossible. Looks like this is gonna get bloody and painful.
