Various reasons. Sometimes because I misread the question and my comment didn’t really make sense the the actual question. Sometimes because I said something snarky and immediately regretted it. Sometimes because I realize I’m arguing with a brick wall and just don’t want to get into it. Once because I knew deleting the comment would annoy the OP far more than the comment itself would have 🤷‍♂

Two reasons I can think of:

- The author realised his/her mistake.

- The author lost the debate, and to save himself/herself from further humiliation, decided to delete what he/she said.
